It is very important the basic meaning of Mudra. Mudra is a Sanskrit word, which means and gesture, pose or a position. Mudras which are known as (hastas) in Indian classical Dance forms. Classical Dances such as Kathak, Bharatnatyam, Odissi, Manipuri etc. use different hand gestures in their performance which are used to denote variety of things, in dances including objects, feelings and emotions etc.
 
Mudras are described extensively in Hindu and Buddhist scriptures. One can see the ancient iconographies of both the religions in Buddhist and Hindu Temples.
 
Dance and performing art texts of ancient India also cover and explain the different Mudras (Hastas) used for different purposes while dancing. Texts such as Natyashastra by renowned sage Bharatmuni and Abhinaya Darpan by Nandikeshwara explains Mudras like Samyuta Mudras Asamyuta Mudras.  Samyuta is mudras performed with 2 hands and Asamyuta mudras are mudras performed with single hands.
 
It is said the entire creation is based on 5 element (Earth, Water, Fire, Ether and Space) similarly our entire body is made of 5 elements and as our human body is the part of the universe it clearly proves our body also consists of 5 elements. Mudras are sacred codes which connect your mind body and soul. Mudras help to balance the 5 elements in our body, they help to build stamina and improve our health. Body postures and hand gestures performed in a certain way helps  the (prana) the energy to flow in a certain direction which strengthens the bones muscles and joints. The energy helps the organs to function better and also boost ones mental concentration.
 
Practicing mudras is believed to be an art, therapy, which brings oneness of body and Mind. Through practicing there mudras one can enhance their breathing, concentration. One can practice Mudras while simple breath work, while meditating, Visualising, Chanting, while dancing and using different facial expressions or eye movements.
 
Before practicing Mudras or any, posture one must prepare their body  in terms of flexibility. One must do some stretches, exercises to warm up and releases the tension stiffness in the body parts, fingers, wrists etc.
